INNIO Group and Energie SaarLorLux plan climate-neutral power generation by 2032 at the latest
• By 2032 at the latest, Energie SaarLorLux plans to fully convert the existing 53 MW GAMOR power plant with its Jenbacher engines to green hydrogen
• With this ambitious transformation, INNIO Group and Energie SaarLorLux are taking a pioneering role in climate-neutral flexible power generation with combined heat and power (CHP) plants.
• In the event of a cross-regional power outage, the Jenbacher engines can function as a black start power plant and support the city's water distribution infrastructure.
JENBACH, Austria– June 28, 2024 – INNIO Group and the Saarbrücken-based energy provider Energie SaarLorLux aim to convert the GAMOR gas engine power plant to green hydrogen. A joint memorandum of understanding has been signed for this purpose.
This involves five Jenbacher engines from INNIO Group, which are to be fully operated with this CO2-free energy source by 2032 at the latest. Today, the highly efficient and flexible Jenbacher CHP plant, which was commissioned in 2022 as a replacement for a former coal-fired power plant along the Saar River, operates on natural gas.
By switching from coal to natural gas, Energie SaarLorLux already can save around 60,000 tons of CO2 annually. The conversion to green hydrogen will enable CO2-free electricity supply for 65,000 households and CO2-free heat supply for 11,000 households. This step towards climate-neutral power generation is significantly ahead of the German federal government's target of 2045. A prerequisite for this is the timely availability of green hydrogen in sufficient quantities and at economical conditions.
"With the commissioning of our Jenbacher large engines, Energie SaarLorLux completed the coal phase-out in 2022. We are pleased to now start the next milestone towards climate neutrality by 2032 with the conversion of GAMOR to green hydrogen," explains Dr. Olaf Berlien, president and CEO of INNIO Group.
"By planning to convert GAMOR to green hydrogen by 2032 at the latest, we not only are supporting the transformation of the energy supply in Saarland but also can take a pioneering role nationwide," says Joachim Morsch, Board Member and Spokesperson of Energie SaarLorLux AG.
Due to their black start capability, the Jenbacher engines can support the local power supply independently of the power grid in the event of a blackout. With Jenbacher technology, GAMOR can thus restore both the power supply for Saarbrücken's district heating and the water supply during a blackout. Thanks to the innovative Jenbacher solution, GAMOR is one of the few power plants in Germany with this capability.

Energie SaarLorLux AG, headquartered in Saarbrücken, is a company of ENGIE Deutschland GmbH and Stadtwerke Saarbrücken GmbH. As a regional energy provider, we supply over 160,000 customers with electricity, gas, district heating, energy technology systems, and energy-related services. We are expanding renewable energies, advising and supporting our business customers on their path to energy efficiency and climate neutrality, and expanding the e-charging infrastructure in the region. We employ around 184 employees and stand for sustainability, regionality, and customer orientation. Climate-friendly energy is particularly close to our hearts. At our power plants on the Römerbrücke in Saarbrücken, we generate electricity and district heating highly efficiently through the process of combined heat and power (CHP). Since 2022, we have been operating one of the most modern power plants in Germany with GAMOR (gas engine power plant). With GAMOR, the coal phase-out in Saarbrücken was implemented. With our power plants and the goal of "green" energy generation at the Römerbrücke, we are contributing to the energy transition in Saarland. We are available to our customers online, by phone, and in person at our company headquarters, the "House of the Future" in the heart of Saarbrücken. Energie SaarLorLux is strongly committed to culture, sports, the environment, and social causes in the region.
